The number of confirmed victims in Beirut goes to 100, it is said that there are more under the rubble

The head of the Red Cross in Beirut has said that the total number of victims of the powerful explosion in Beirut has reached 100 and more dead bodies are still under the rubble. George Kettaneh told LBCI television over the phone that the Red Cross is coordinating with the Ministry of Health to take the bodies because the hospitals are overcrowded.

Moreover, about four thousand people were injured by the massive explosion that occurred in a warehouse and shook the Lebanese capital. Tuesday's outbreak was the strongest in recent years in the city, which is already suffering from the economic crisis and rising number of coronavirus cases.

The country's president, Michel Aoun, said 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, used in fertilizers and bombs, had been stored in the port depot for six years without security measures, adding that such a thing was unacceptable. He has called an emergency cabinet meeting for Wednesday. State officials have not indicated what exactly caused the devastating blast. The blast evoked memories of the 1970-1990 civil war and its aftermath, when Lebanese had experienced heavy bombardment, car bombings and airstrikes by Israel.
